National Conference of AIFWL held at Chennai on 6,7&8th January 2012
The Tamil Nadu Federation of Women Lawyers was happy to host the National Conference of the All India Federation at Chennai. A 55 member team of the Conference Organising Committee conducted the Conference in a grand manner.
The Theme of the Conference was Empowerment of Women and the keynote address was given by Hon’ble Mrs. Ranjana P. Desai, Judge, Supreme Court. Hon’ble Mr. P. Sathasivam, Judge, Supreme Court as he was then, presently the Chief Justice of India inaugurated the conference .Hon’ble Mr. D. Murugesan, Judge, Madras High Court released the Souvenir and the first designated Senior Advocate of Madras High Court, Mrs. Nalini Chidambaram received the same. Hon’ble Mrs. Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of State, Ministry of Environment and Forest and Mr. C. Ve. Shanmugham, Minister for School Education, Sports and Youth Welfare, Law, Courts and Prisons, Government of Tamil Nadu.
In recognition of the service of Tamil Nadu Federation of Women Lawyers, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Ms. J. Jayalalitha had announced a sum of Rs 20, 00,000/-for the conduct of the conference. Hon’ble M.Yusuf Iqbal, Chief Justice of Madras, High Court addressed the gathering. Mr. P. Navaneetha Krishnan ,Advocate General of TamilNadu, Mrs. Sheela Anish, President, FIDA, Mr.P.H.Parekh, President, Supreme Bar Association also greeted the Conference.
’Stree Vakil Puraskar’ awards to honour outstanding Women lawyers was presented to Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Usha Sugumaran, Former Chief Justice ,Kerala High Court, Mrs. Sheela Anish, President, FIDA.

Hon’ble Mr. D. Jayakumar, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu was the Chief Guest participated in the in the Valedictory function. For the first time ‘Social Activism Award ’was presented to Dr. V. Shantha, Chairman, Adyar Cancer Institute, Chennai. Ms. Ruth Manorama, President, National Alliance of Women and Ms. Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee, Siru Thuli.

The Role of TNFWL in National Conferences of AIFWL
The Tamil Nadu Federation of Women Lawyers is a vibrant Organisation and that reflected in all the National Conferences. Tamil Nadu Federation of Women Lawyers received awards for the largest delegation both in 2009 and 2010.We received Early Bird Awards in Cochin and Hyderabad Conference. Our President Mrs. K. Santhakumari was elected as the Secretary of All India Federation of Women Lawyers for two consecutive terms.
Mrs. K. Santhakumari was elected as the President of All India Federation of Women Lawyers in 2011. A three member delegations(The President Mrs.K.Santhakumari, Joint Secretary Mrs.E.Sumathy, and Mrs.K.Kavitha) from Chennai attended the 34th convention of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) which was held at Nigeria. Mrs. K. Santhakumari was one of the panelists in the session which discussed on Gender Equality, Human Rights and Empowerment of women. She spoke on ‘How the Progressive Legislations in India had paved way for Empowerment of Women’.
